Rabid Angel's Full CD Collection [01 Jan 2012|02:06am]
[ mood | quixotic ]
[ music | VNV Nation - Honour ]

Here's the most current list of my [DJ Rabid Angel's] CDs. If you want to request something but you don't see it on this list, ask anyways! I have a slew of unorganized MP3s and prmotional material that just might have what you're looking for, and if I don't have it available there's always a chance that one of my cohorts behind the boards may have a copy.

This page is part of Corruption's memories here on LJ and it gets updated frequently. I've also added a link to this page on Corruption's user info page, so that we can find this thing a bit more easily. :-)

After the enormously positive feedback for 2005's Black Sun Festival, the light has gone green and plans are in the works for Black Sun 2006, tentatively scheduled for July of next year. So far no decisions have been made regarding location, acts and events, but it's a given that this festival will rock again next year.

Keep yourselves posted! Join Black Sun's Live Journal community, [info]blacksun_fest, and bookmark the event's website:

This is an ongoing post khyped from many, many sources. In a nutsehll the New England Punk, Goth, and Metal Fest (NEPGM), scheduled for early October, has been told by the city manager of Lowell that they can not hold their event because they do not want to cater to that "demographic" of people. That's in writing, by the way.

Excuse me?! That demographic?! Yes sir, kiddies. That's us.

Please read the press release below, sign the online petition and then send the Lowell city government some mail, electronic or otherwise. Then post this, pass it on and submit it to your local papers and any news/media that will be interested. Time is running short -- artists are booked and the date draws nigh -- so let's give these folks all the support we can give them.

x-posted to [info]dj_rabid_angel's journal and a bunch of other places.

Underground Festival = victim of prejudice and censorship?

New England's largest underground music festival, the New England Punk, Goth, and Metal Fest (NEPGM), is under persecution by political forces at City Hall. For the scene, and for their integrity, the promoters will not back down - this Festival WILL happen, come hell or high water. What can you do to help?

First off, we have a petition going:

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/pgmf2005/petition.html

Also, we need media coverage on what's going on. Media sways public opinion, so we need this story leaked to newspapers, TV, radio all over New England. To make thing easier, I've written up a simple press release which can be copy-and-pasted into an email and quickly sent to media outlets all over the Northeast. I want them to contact us, and we'll give them the hottest story of their careers! Here it is:

Alternative Music Festival Promoters Forced to Fight City Hall

The first annual New England Punk, Goth, and Metal Festival is now in danger of being relocated from its originally-contracted site, Lowell’s LeLecheur Park, due to opposition from the City Manager’s office.

In what was a sudden turn of events, the Festival’s promoters received a call on August 15th with information that the NEPGM Music Festival, slated for October 1 & 2 and probably one of the most talked about regional all-ages events in recent years, was suddenly at the risk of being displaced from its chosen venue.

This will in effect inconvenience the 5,000 fans and the 70+ bands under contract with the promoters of the event. It has also impacted the local shops and vendors who were looking forward with anticipation to this Festival because of the major financial impact this will have on the regional economy.

The city of Lowell is apparently refusing to allow the fest to occur at The Ballpark, citing the possibility that it might attract "a different sort of demographic". Promoters Mar and Marchesi, who have contracted with 70+ local bands and 4 national headlining acts, have vowed to continue to forge ahead with the plans concocted for this event that were formulated over 8 months ago.

OK...this is the lineup for Gothstock 2005. [info]dj_nocte, [info]icon_of_chris and I will be there. Given that some of the lineup is dark-metal oriented I doubt we'll stick around for the whole event. I've bolded, however, the acts that we'll be there for.

Upcoming events for August:
Posted by DJ Rabid Angel

Phew! The coming month is going to be busy for everyone up here! We here at CM have been kinda caught up in, like, a billion other things so we've been a bit derelict in our duties as Informants for All Things Cool in Our Scene.™ Sorry about t3h slacking, kids...

Manray's last night at the old building!

Tonight [07/30] is Manray's last night at their current location. This evening is the final Transmission, which is oddly appropriate. So long as there has been a "scene" in New England, there has been Manray. The club's intent is to find a new home and we have been assured that this is certainly NOT the end of the legend. It's merely a new chapter in the story. But for what it's worth, the setting is changing and tonight is your last chance to catch a piece of history.

Bottle Rocket's Last Big Bang [O'Brien's Pub; 3 Harvard Ave., Allston (MA)]

August 2nd
Cover is $5 [21+]
Doors open from 9PM-1AM

Another staple in the New England scene, Bottle Rocket, is changing. Actually it's ending. :-\

This event, which has always billed itself as "Fucked up music for fucked up people," is having its fourth and final anniversary. Bottle Rocket was formed as an ecclectic night that gave many of our area's finest DJs a chance to spin outside of the box and play music that they normally wouldn't play. In a subculture that often gets pigeonholed for being the same no matter where one goes, Bottle Rocket gave the world a chance to see facets of our world that most people didn't even know existed.

For a better summary of the scoop with Bottle Rocket check out this post...

Upcoming events at The Haven [Diva's Nightclub; Northampton, MA]:

Doors open at 9PM and close at 2AM
General non-concert admission is $7 [18+] or $5 [21+]

Resident DJs: Penelope, DevNull and Addam Bombb

August 2nd: Yours truly [DJ Rabid Angel] will be spinning first hour. So get there early, show some support and have fun on the dancefloor!

August 9th: Guest DJ Coppertop [Indianapolis]...

August 16th: Haven's 9th annual gothic beach party!...

August 23rd: Lunascape's Reminiscence CD release party...

August 30th: STROMKERN AND PTI LIVE! [tickets at the door are $14 and $12 (18+/21+, respectively)]

The Black Sun Festival...various venues in New Haven, CT:

We've been talking about this one for months now and it's finally almost here. If you've been living in a cave or under a rock you may not have heard about this event, which promises to be one of the best get-togethers in our scene for 2005.

This event is 18+. Tickets are $97 for the full weekend [they are $77 up until August 1st...get 'em cheaper while you can!], but day passes are available. Tickets for Friday are $34; Saturday passes are $44 and Sunday's tickets are a steal at $11.

The band line-up includes: Bella Morte, Carfax Abbey, Das Ich, decoded Feedback, Dismantled, Ego Likeness, Iris, mindFIELD, Nightcrawler 1947, Platform One, Razed in Black, and -- get this! -- an open-air concert on the New Haven Green with Voltaire!

This event will span across several venues in New Haven, including Toad's Place, The Lily Pad, Alchemy and The New Haven Green. For a full schedule of events look behind this cut... )

Just a heads up, kids...this evening I'm intent on kicking ass over the airwaves so you all should tune in. The theme is fat beats tonight and I'm planning to red-line the board with two hours of heavy industrial, thumpin' EBM and quite a bit of power noize.

Tune in from 7 to 9PM [Eastern Standard Time, US] at http://www.rfb.fm by clicking the on-air light, or if you're local to the Brattleboro area spin your FM dial to 107.9. Then stop by here at this journal to keep me company while I'm spinning.

Oh! And bring your friends! Lately things have been kinda slow around here and we need to make sure all this good music gets out there to the masses. :-]

Concert review: Soman, Imperative Reaction and VNV Nation [Axis, Boston, 06/12/05] [13 Jun 2005|11:52am]
From the l4pt0p, en route from Baw-stuhn:

Last night Glenn, Wonton, Nhan and I went to see VNV Nation, Soman and Imperative reaction at Axis in Boston. Given that VNV is a staple of every DJ's repertoire in our scene and given that the last time we saw Imperative Reaction we were blown away by their show, this concert was highly anticipated. And we weren't disappointed.

Surprisingly enough we've never been to Axis before. Aside from an annoying time finding parking -- which could have been worse, given that the venue is directly across from Fenway, but at least the Sox had an away game -- I really liked the venue. The sound system was excellent [though a bit high on the volume and thus somewhat distorted], the space was decent and the people, aside from one bouncer at the door, were pretty cool. We got there and the DJ was playing some killer EBM and powernoise. The mixing was a bit rough but the selection kinda made up for it. Angela seems to think Shivar was spinning? I wouldn't know as I never met her, but I enjoyed the stuff that I was hearing.

After maybe 45 minutes Soman took the stage. I'll be honest...I've never even heard of Soman. I know...bad DJ! Bad DJ! And I wish I'd heard of the project earlier. Consisting of only one man, AKA Kolja Trelle, Soman purveys some really well-crafted straight-up powernoise. I really got a kick out of the stage show. One guy, his laptop, a killer light show and lots of knob twiddling. It reminded me quite a bit of the days of raves back before they become homogenized legal activities for bored college preppies. I also like the fact that Kolja seems to take great delight in making crowds move.

There was a brief musical interlude from the DJ and then Imperative Reaction took the stage. As Glenn said right before they came on stage, Imperative Reaction is a really good band on CD but they're a really great band on stage. I was really pleased with the songs that they played, which ranged from old favorites like Salvation to other stuff that I've never heard. Sound wise the vocals were mixed a bit sludgy, but everything was still audible. I think the best part of Imperative Reaction's show is watching the interplay of the band...their drummer is phenomenal and it was neat to see that rather than rely on vox effects, much of the cool lyrical backing is instead provided by the synth player. Seriously...I think he sang almost as much as the lead singer.

There was another DJ fueled musical interlude and then VNV took the station. All I can say is DAY-UMM! After talking to Ronan for a bit while I was outside smoking a cigarette I had a feeling that the guy had a funny sense of humor, but I didn't think he'd be so engaging on stage as well. They took the stage and the first thing Ronan did was turn on the Irish charm. After a bit the music started with Chrome. I don't remember the setlist in order but I know that they also played: Legion [which got an amusing nod from Ronan, dedicated to those of us with Live Journals as "that song about "'swords'"], Epicenter [my favorite from the live set], Arena, Honour, Darkangel, Endless Skies, Joy, Beloved, and bunch of other stuff that I can't remember. All told they gave us two hours of their time and THREE encores. Given that it was, like, three billion degrees in the room I think that's pretty damned impressive.

Technically I was impressed by the show but kinda unhappy with the balance between the vocals and the music. I felt there were times when the beat and synths kinda drowned Ronan out a bit. It was a minor thing but it was kinda distracting. At least the music was good even though not well mixed. Mark is a powerhouse on stage. He's an impressive drummer and he put a ton of energy into rallying the crowd and encouraging us to dance, clap and raise our hands with the music. Given that his drum set is set up center stage and it's a rather imposing structure, I got the sense that Mark acts a bit like a priest exalting the crowd to worship the music and the power of dancing. Ronan played his part too, not just with his monologues and humor but also by immersing himself in the music. At times he'd turn and dance as if he were directing the beats, conducting the show as if it were an orchestra; at other times he'd flit across the stage, singing directly to the audience and encouraging everyone to enjoy the music. And the interplay between the two keyboardists was fun...the two played off of each other, feeding the flow and making the sound smooth as it enwrapped the beats in sound.

I also really appreciate that Ronan and Mark frequently stopped their show to pass out water to the audience. By the time they started moving the crowd the venue was swelteringly hot despite a really good air conditioning system. As usual for clubs these days water cost $4 a pop, as if the almighty freakin' dollar is more important than making sure nobody passes out due to dehydration. It really pisses me off so I appreciate the effort that the band made in trying to look out for us. But I think that's a knack that they picked up touring Europe so often. Ever notice how the European bands tend to do stuff like that a lot?

All told this concert was excellent. Soman introduced me to some new music, which I promptly went out and bought. Imperative Reaction lived up to my memories of the last time I saw them, providing and eexcellent live show and some heavy-hitting dancefloor drum and synth with awesome lyrics. And VNV was everything that I'd imagined: old favorites, new music and a great stage presence. To those who have seen this tour already I hope you enjoyed your show as much as I did. To those who have yet to see it, may you have a great time!
